The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to an individual to recognize a lifetime of scientific excellence and outstanding contributions to the field of Artificial Intelligence. We are delighted this year to present this award to Dr. Alan Mackworth.
Alan is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia, where he has been a faculty member since 1984 and presently holds a Canada Research Chair in Artificial Intelligence (since 2001). After studying at the University of Toronto (B.A.Sc.) and Harvard University (A.M.), he received his D.Phil. from Sussex University in 1974. As the founding director of the Laboratory for Computational Intelligence at UBC, he has played a leading role in establishing one of Canada's and, indeed, the world's leading AI groups.
Alan's work is on constraint-based computational intelligence with applications in vision, robotics and situated agents. He is known as a pioneer in the areas of constraint satisfaction, robot soccer and constraint-based agents. He has published about 100 scientific papers and co-authored two influential books on Artificial Intelligence: "Computational Intelligence: A Logical Approach" published by Oxford University Press in 1998, and "Artificial Intelligence: Foundation of Computational Agents" published in 2009 by Cambridge University Press.
Alan has served on many program and conference committees. Notably, he was Conference Chair of IJCAI-85 and President and Trustee of IJCAI Inc.. Alan is a member of the IJCAI Executive Committee and serves on the editorial boards of Artificial Intelligence, Computational Intelligence and Constraints. He has been VP and President of the Canadian Society for Computational Studies of Intelligence (CSCSI), now CAIAC, and he has served as President of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI).
Alan has received the ITAC/NSERC Award for Academic Excellence, the Killam Research Prize (2001) and the CSCSI Distinguished Service Award. Alan is a Fellow of AAAI and the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, and in 2009, he has been inducted as a Fellow into the Royal Society of Canada.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to AI, and to the Canadian AI community in particular, it is our great pleasure to present the CAIAC Lifetime Achievement award to Dr. Alan Mackworth.
